DEEP DIVE

There can be no more important question than to ask how a person can be both accepted by God and live in his presence day by day.  It could be argued to be the underlying thread running through the whole of the Bible.  It comes to a climax in what is generally considered to be the most important letter Paul ever wrote – that is the Book of Romans in the New Testament.  It would certainly be difficult to overstate the influence of this letter upon the way Christians think and live.  Martin Luther believed that Romans was so important that it should be memorised word for word and thought about every day.  It has helped to shape the history of the Christian church.

SAVED BY GRACE ALONE

For the Dive this week I wanted to look at a topic that is quite big but incredibly pertinent to our lives as Christians, and I feel like a child with Kindergarten knowledge trying to tackle a topic like Quantum physics. The topic that I am talking about is Salvation. The theological debate over salvation and how we are saved is a massive topic, even in the 1st Century church, Paul was passionate about not adding to the gospel message anything of works or human tradition. That is why time and time again in the New Testament we hear his call, that we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8).

Part Three

Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we also live with him - count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

R 6:8

DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE IN CHRIST

There is an elephant in the room in the book of Romans, so rather than ignoring it we are going to tackle it head on. It’s not a topic that people like talking about, but you know us here at TYB we like to tackle the hard topics so that we can walk in freedom. The topic I am talking about is sin.

Romans 6 addresses the concept of being “Dead to Sin, Alive to Christ”. When we look at Romans in my NT Survey class after reading Romans 6 in full, I ask the students “Do you feel dead to sin?” Most answer the same way, “No I really don’t, sometimes I feel like sin is alive and thriving in me.” One student said “Only when I’m asleep!” When we are all honest, we all battle with sin on a daily basis. I love the Tweety Bird cartoon, that says “Dear Lord, So far today I am doing alright, I haven’t gossipped, lost my temper, been greedy, cursed, been nasty or selfish.. But I will be getting out of bed in a minute and I think that I will really need your help then!

Thousands, upon thousands of books, articles, journals, blogs, commentaries, study notes, and lesson plans, have all been composed, with the same objective in mind. Offering helpful, often new and insightful ways of reading and interpreting the 6th book of the New Testament, Romans. The aim of this Deep Dive is to take a snapshot of some of the contemporary methods and criticisms. To offer a framework, to enable you to follow the arguments and complex rhetoric oft used by Paul, and to take some ephemeral ideas and perspectives and present them as a guide, or at the very least something to keep in mind while you continue your odyssey into the depths of Romans.
