1&2 Peter

THE NEW PEOPLE OF GOD

The comeback king Peter is the disciple that never gives up. I would pay a fortune to see Peter speak at a Conference but I don’t need to all I need to do is read his letters. These two letters are from the disciple that was a part of Jesus inner circle, he saw the miracles, he saw the resurrection, he was at the Day of Pentecost, he met Paul and now he shares his wisdom with us in two short letters that will change your life.

Part One

above all, love each other deeply

1 p 4:8

These are the letters written by the Apostle Peter. The comeback king. The one who preached and saw 3000 saved. The one who walked on the water.

YOUR TRIALS ARE YOUR MESSAGE

Peter reminds me of Rocky! I am a huge Rocky fan, I know it’s weird for a super girly girl but I love the fact that Rocky got beaten, lost, made mistakes but he got back up and kept on fighting. I remember watching one of the Rocky movies with some of my friends, and I was so involved in the movie that I yelled at the top of my voice “Rip his head off Rocky!” I was shocked at my own passion, but there is something in all of us that loves the person that just keeps going. That overcomes adversity, overcomes others hatred, overcomes their own failures, and wins. If you are like that, you are going to love 1 and 2 Peter!

FAITHFUL LIVING IN AN UNFAITHFUL WORLD ps kate forsyth

In the world we live in, believers can experience persecution, opposition or alienation in workplaces, schools and universities or, in some places or families, extreme hostility that threatens safety or even life. 1 Peter is addressed to believers living under intense persecution and trials and addresses the issue of how to live in the face of such hostility.

ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?

As you read 1 Peter you get a sense straight away that the original audience is the Jewish Christians. If you are doing our schedule you have probably worked out now that there is great benefit in knowing who the author was talking too, it determines the language they use, the way they describe the events and even the use of the supporting evidence (for example Matthew uses Old Testament references because he his audience are Jewish Christians, Luke uses Greek terms as his audience are Greek Christians). Now, this doesn’t stop the text from speaking to us directly, knowing the intended audience helps us to get more out of the text rather than excluding us from its promises and message.

PETER'S TRINITARIAN GOSPEL PS DAN GORRY

Today we are looking at 1 Peter, and to be honest, I could barely go past the first few verses before discovering something I wanted to focus on; Peter’s trinitarian gospel. 1 Peter 1:2 - ‘God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ.’

THE LAST WORDS OF PETER

I hope you are really enjoying reading the two books we have from one of the main apostles of Jesus. I mean think about that, we have the opportunity to read the writings of Peter, who lived over 2000 years ago and walked with Jesus! C’mon how amazing is that!

Now history tells us that Peter is at the end of his life when he is writing 2 Peter, the book is written in 65-67AD, and we know that Peter was martyred by Nero in AD67, he was crucified upside down as he didn’t feel worthy to die the same way as his Saviour Jesus Christ!
