1&2 Peter

the new people of god

The comeback king, Peter, is the disciple who never gives up. I would pay a fortune to see Peter speak at a conference, but I don’t need to – all I need to do is read his letters. These two books are authored by the disciple who was a part of Jesus’ inner circle; he saw the miracles, he denied Jesus and kept going, he saw the resurrected Christ, he was at the day of Pentecost, he met Paul and now he shares his wisdom with us in two short letters that will change your life.

DIVE - YOUR TRIALS ARE YOUR MESSAGE |katie haldane

Peter reminds me of Rocky! I am a huge Rocky fan, I know it’s weird for a super girly girl but I love the fact that Rocky got beaten, lost, made mistakes but he got back up and kept on fighting. I remember watching one of the Rocky movies with some of my friends, and I was so involved in the movie that I yelled at the top of my voice “Rip his head off Rocky!” I was shocked at my own passion, but there is something in all of us that loves the person that just keeps going.

dEEP DIVE - BELIEF & BEHAVIOUR | NATHAN ROSS

In a general summary, the books of 1 and 2 Peter are very broad letters. Broad in the sense of both the audience and theological topics. 1 Peter 1:1 notes that these letters are sent from the Apostle Peter to “those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.

Part Two

DIVE - ARE YOU TALKING TO ME?| katie haldane

As you read 1 Peter you get a sense straight away that the original audience is the Jewish Christians. If you are doing our schedule you have probably worked out now that there is great benefit in knowing who the author was talking too, it determines the language they use, the way they describe the events and even the use of the supporting evidence (for example Matthew uses Old Testament references because he his audience are Jewish Christians, Luke uses Greek terms as his audience are Greek Christians).

DEEP DIVE - PETER'S TRINITARIAN GOSPEL | PS DAN GORRY

Today we are looking at 1 Peter, and to be honest, I could barely go past the first few verses before discovering something I wanted to focus on; Peter’s trinitarian gospel. 1 Peter 1:2 - ‘God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ.’

Part Three

DIVE - the last words of peter | katie haldane

I hope you are really enjoying reading the two books we have from one of the main apostles of Jesus. I mean think about that, we have the opportunity to read the writings of Peter, who lived over 2000 years ago and walked with Jesus! C’mon how amazing is that!

deep dive - FAITHFUL LIVING IN AN UNFAITHFUL WORLD | ps kate forsyth

In the world we live in, believers can experience persecution, opposition or alienation in workplaces, schools and universities or, in some places or families, extreme hostility that threatens safety or even life. 1 Peter is addressed to believers living under intense persecution and trials and addresses the issue of how to live in the face of such hostility.
