Learn from their mistakes.

1 Kings 13:33 Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people.

Reflection

1 & 2 Kings are historical books that are looking back on the mistakes of the previous generation and noting those who did right in God’s eyes and those who did evil. The Bible not only shows us good examples to follow but it also presents lives to learn from and use as a warning to change our behaviour. The Old Testament story is one of sadness and triumph, promises and exile. And as you read it, you’ll get to know the long-suffering God that continues to walk with His people the whole way through. Jeroboam makes a big mistake and sets up idols in God’s Kingdom that continue for generations to come. As we read this sad story, I ask myself: am I living a life that is honouring God? Am I doing the right thing? Do I need to change and start doing right in God’s eyes?

Question

Are you living a life that honours God? What can you adjust in your life to live a life from ‘doing evil’ to ‘doing right’ in God’s eyes?

Prayer

Father, forgive me where I have done just as Jeroboam did in Kings, where I have done evil in your eyes. I thank you that the Bible is a book that inspires and warns me about my behaviour. Lord, I ask for forgiveness and I pray for your guidance, strength and wisdom to change my ways.
